How to Make a Template for Cabinet Doorknobs

New kitchen cabinet hardware can refresh the look of your entire kitchen, and replacing dated knobs and pulls with doorknobs that have a different shape and a modern metal finish is an inexpensive project you can do yourself. Whether your cabinets are painted or stained, your knobs should all line up when the cabinet doors are closed. An installation template will help you align them properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one 4-inch square from a piece of medium-weight paper, and cut one 4-inch square from a piece of lightweight cardboard.

    • 2

Align one corner of the paper square with the corner of the cabinet where the knob will go. Tape the square to the door.

    • 3

Position the cabinet knob on the paper square in the position where you want to install it. Hold the knob against the paper, and mark the location of the knob on the paper with a pencil.

    • 4

Remove the paper from the cabinet door. Align the edges of the paper square with the edges of the cardboard square. Push the point of a push pin, tack or finish nail through the pencil mark on the paper so that the point penetrates the paper and the cardboard.

    • 5

Remove the paper square. Push the push pin through the pinhole in the cardboard square, and swivel the pin slightly to enlarge the hole enough to accommodate the tip of a pencil. To use the template, align the side edge and lower edge of the template with the side edge and lower edge of the cabinet door. Mark the knob placement with a pencil through the hole in the cardboard.
