Bar Counter Sizes

The kitchen is among the most active rooms in the home and as such must have a layout that is both functional and aesthetically appealing. Adding a bar or island to the design is an ideal way to increase the storage and work space of the room. The size and style of the piece will vary greatly and countertop sizes are adjustable depending on the size of the kitchen and personal needs.
  1. Depth

    • Depth is the measurement from the front of the countertop to the back. The standard depth of the countertop is going to vary a little depending on the chosen material, but is on average 25 ½ inches deep. This measurement will include approximately a 1 ½ inch overhang from the cabinet the counter sits on.

    Height

    • The standard height of a countertop, regardless of material, is 1 ½ inches. Once installed onto a cabinet, the overall height is 36 inches. This measurement is based on standard pre-made cabinet sizes and is adjustable with custom designed pieces. When measuring for a space intended for eating in, a bit more rise is required. In this situation, a total measurement between 42 and 46 inches is ideal. This added few inches will make the space comfortable for sitting in chairs or bar stools.

    L-Shaped Bars

    • The L-shape island is among the most widely-used styles in modern kitchens and is ideal for small or large rooms. This design features two countertops that are arranged perpendicular to each other and is a style that is adjustable to personal preference and needs. The style lends itself to different storage designs and additions, including drawers, shelves or cabinets and provides seating space along the exterior. The depth of the countertop should be no less than two feet, though four feet is preferable.

    Square and Rectangular Bars

    • Square and rectangular bars are a basic style ideal for just about any size kitchen. It is among the most functional, particularly when centrally located within the kitchen and allows for easy movement along all sides. The countertop length is going to vary greatly depending on personal preference or allotted space, but depth should be at least two feet.
