How to Make Marks for a Sink on Granite

To cut an opening for a sink, you must first place layout lines on the surface of the counter. If the counter material, such as granite, is dark, you can lay out the cut lines using masking tape. Place the masking tape on the counter before drawing the outline of the sink opening. Once the layout is complete, you'll be able to cut through the tape and the granite counter with ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sink basin to determine the cut-out dimensions that you will transfer to the granite countertop.

    • 2

Determine the countertop location where you'll install the sink. Check the underside of the granite countertop to make sure that no obstacles, such as plumbing or cabinet walls, are in the way.

    • 3

Lay strips of masking tape to mark the outline of the sink on the granite countertop. Transfer the cut-out measurements of the sink opening to the masking tape, using a felt tip marker and a straight-edge tool such as a 4-foot level.

Add more strips of tape if the layout lines land on any exposed granite to ensure visibility. Double-check the location of the layout lines and placement of the sink before making any cuts in the granite.
