Measure one inch in from the vertical edge of the cabinets. Make this mark near the bottom edge for upper cabinets, or near the top edge for lower cabinets.
Place a T-square against the horizontal edge of the door and line it up with the mark you just made. Draw a vertical line over the mark with a pencil. The line should be about four inches long, but this doesn't have to be exact.
Measure down along the vertical edge two to three inches and make a mark at this point. The point you mark is based on your personal preference, so you don't have to use these exact measurements. Just make a note of the initial measurement so all of the cabinets are uniform.
Place the T-square along the vertical edge of the door, and line it up with the mark you just made. Draw a horizontal line across the first line you made. This will create a crisscross mark, and the knob will be placed where the lines intersect.
Hold the knob against the crisscross, and determine whether you like this placement. Make any adjustments as necessary. When you are satisfied, write down the exact measurements you used to mark the crisscross.
Repeat this process for all of the cabinet doors, and continue using the measurements you wrote down previously. Read the packaging included with your knobs to see what size screws are used to secure the knobs to the doors. Three-sixteenths of an inch is fairly common.
Fit a drill with a bit in the required size, such as three-sixteenths inch.
Work with a partner and instruct him to hold the door steady as you drill. Place the drill bit against the mark you made, and hold the drill perfectly level -- it is best to work on a ladder if you are installing knobs on higher cabinets, so you are at eye-level with the drill.
Drill a hole straight through the door at the mark you made. Slowly pull the drill's trigger to get the hole started, and then apply gentle pressure to guide the drill straight through the door. Repeat this process for all of your cabinet doors. Wipe the sawdust from each door, and erase the pencil marks you made earlier.
Place the knob at the hole you made and slide the included screw through the hole on the other side. Hand-tighten the screw until it's secure, and then hold the knob in place and tighten the screw with the appropriate screwdriver until the knob is no longer loose or wobbly. Repeat the process for all of your cabinets.
