How to Remove Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Whereas many kitchen sinks are lowered into the countertop and held in place by the edges of the sink, undermount sinks, as their name suggests, are secured in place from underneath the counter. Removing an undermount sink is a bit more challenging than a traditional sink because you must lower the sink away from the countertop, rather than lifting the sink out of the counter. The key to removing an undermount sink is to support the weight of the sink when detaching it.

Turn off the hot and cold water-supply lines located underneath the counter. Note that two oval-shaped handles protrude from the wall. These are the water-supply valves. Rotate the handles to their extreme clockwise position to turn them off.

Place a bucket underneath the drain trap. The drain trap is the curved portion of pipe that connects the sink’s drain pipe to the pipe that protrudes from the wall. Note that the ends of the trap feature two large nuts, called slip nuts. Turn the slip nuts in a counterclockwise direction with an adjustable wrench until the nuts disconnect from the pipes, then slide the nuts away from the end of the trap. Pull the trap downward until it detaches from the pipes and allow the water to drain into the bucket.

Disconnect the water-supply tubes from the underside of the faucet. As with the drain trap, both ends of the two supply tubes feature an integral nut called a coupling nut. Loosen the coupling nuts and pull the lines away from the sink in the same manner used to remove the drain trap’s slip nuts.

Remove the garbage disposer from the sink, if the sink is fitted with a disposer. Unplug the disposer’s electrical supply cord. Remove the rubber water-supply line from the top of one side of the disposer. This hose is secured to the disposer with a metal clamp that features one screw. Turn the screw in a counterclockwise direction with a screwdriver to loosen the clamp, then pull the hose away from the disposer. Disconnect the water-supply pipe from the side of the disposer. This supply pipe is secured to the disposer with a slip nut. Loosen the slip nut in the same manner used to disconnect the drain trap, then pull the pipe away from the disposer. Grasp the body of the disposer and turn in a counterclockwise direction until it detaches from the sink.

Remove the sink from the counter. Position a block of wood underneath each end of the sink to support the its weight. Locate the small metal clips along the underside of the edge of the sink. The single screw within the end of each clip tightens into the underside of the counter to secure the sink in place. Remove the screws with a screwdriver. Hold the sink securely and remove the two blocks of wood to lower the sink away from the counter.
