How to Hang Frameless Cabinets Against a Ceiling

Frameless cabinets are stylish, modern, and give the home a European air. People often enjoy the aesthetic and functional qualities of these cabinets. However, they can be more challenging to install than framed cabinets because there is less room for error. With a little planning, and careful attention during installation, frameless cabinets can be a success.

Instructions

Draw the plan for your cabinets on the walls and ceiling. Be sure that all of the lines you draw are level, plumb and square. Check the measurements of your cabinets and the measurements of your lines to be sure that everything will fit properly. Make small marks on the outsides of the boxes that note where the studs in the walls are.

    • 2

Put the corner cabinet in place at the top of the wall in the corner formed by the two walls and the ceiling. You can rest it on a cabinet stand or a helper box, which is simply a box made to the height you need the bottom, to hold the cabinet in place.

Start a screw through the backing material into a stud, using the marks made in Step 1 to locate the stud. Use shims as necessary to make the cabinet level and plumb. Finish attaching the cabinet to the wall with more screws into the studs.

Working out from the first cabinet, install the remaining cabinets in the same manner. Be sure that the new cabinets are flush with those already installed and attach the two cabinets using Chicago bolts. Be very careful to level and plumb each new cabinet since small mistakes can be compounded with each subsequent cabinet.

Once all the cabinets are installed, attach and adjust the doors so that they open and close properly. Then install crown molding, if you are using any. Finally, any underneath lights or fixtures can be installed on the bottoms of the cabinets.
