Curved Corners vs. Straight Granite

Many decisions go into the process of replacing a kitchen counter top. Granite comes in a variety of colors and patterns, both of which greatly affect the appearance of your kitchen. Even the cut of the granite edges -- whether straight or rounded -- can affect the mood and general atmosphere of your kitchen.
  1. Square Edges

    • Square edges and edges with a slight bevel are among the least expensive option for granite edges. Sharp, square edges have a more utilitarian and even professional appearance. It is this utilitarian look that appeals to homeowners who wish to decorate their kitchen in a more contemporary style.

    Bevel Edges

    • Bevel edges are known to be more chip-resistant than square edges. It is this quality that attracts some who would otherwise choose square edges. Typically, the bevel is very slight, so that the overall impression is that the edge of the countertop is straight and hard, just like a square edge.

    Bullnose Edges

    • Bullnose edges are a rounded edge meant to give the granite a more homey and softer appearance. Because granite can have a cold, hard look, this type of cut is preferred by many who choose granite. Bullnose edges may include a rounded top and bottom edge, or a rounded top edge only. Sometimes the slope of the curve is greater than others.

    Ogee Edges

    • Ogee edges are a fancier type of curved countertop edge. The profile of the ogee edge is an S shape. This type of cut requires a thicker slab of granite than the standard 2 centimeters, making this among the more expensive options.
