How to Lift Cabinets

Lifting cabinets for installation can give homeowners quite an upper body workout. Depending upon the building material, a single cabinet can easily weigh over 100 pounds. When it’s necessary to lift, hold and secure that amount of weight, the process can be quite strenuous and tedious. Fortunately, homeowners have more than proper lifting techniques to rely upon to get the job done. Whether you lift and install cabinets on your own or have some assistance, there are a couple of products available that will make the job easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove cabinet doors before lifting and installing to make the task lighter, easier
and to avoid damaging the cabinets.

    • 2

Use a dedicated, electric cabinet lift to haul the pieces into place. Look into renting a machine if the cost of buying one is difficult to justify.

    • 3

Lay the cabinets on its backside in a line on the floor. Use a clamp to hold the front of the frames together. Use a drill to make pilot holes. Screw the frames together. Lift the block of cabinets and assemble into place, with the assistance of one or more persons.

    • 4

Fasten a temporary supporting 2x4 bracket to the wall and then fasten a small block of cabinets, in lieu of any assistance.

    • 5

Use an all-purpose support tool to install cabinets, one at a time, to lift and hold each cabinet into place.
