How to Redo Cabinet Doors With New Hinges

Subtle changes to kitchen cabinetry make a difference in the overall appearance and functionality of the units. The hinges are relatively easy to replace on your kitchen cabinetry to give it a quick update. The type of hinge, as well as the style and finish, are factors in selecting the hinges for your project. Replace only the hinges, or incorporate other changes for a larger makeover. Other update options include replacing the knobs and pulls, painting or adding wood trim to the door fronts.

  Inspect the cabinet's current hinges to determine what you like about them and what you would like different in your new hinges. Note the finishes of other surfaces in the kitchen to help you choose the best hinges for the project. Remove one of the doors from its hinges. Take the hinge along with you to the home improvement store to find an option that is similar in size.

  Shop for new hinges that fit the type of door you have and match the personal preferences you determined in Step 1. Choose full-wrap hinges for a framed cabinet door and partial-wrap hinges for frameless doors.

  Choose hinges with a finish that complements the other metal finishes in the room.

  Remove all remaining cabinet doors by unscrewing the existing hinges. Write notes in pencil on the back side of each door to indicate which doors they are.

  Check the screw lineup between the new hinges and the existing holes on the door. Mark new holes for the hinges if you cannot use the old holes by positioning the hinges one hinge length down from the top and up from the bottom of the door. Trace the holes for the hinges.

  Pre-drill the holes on both the door and the cabinet itself. Use the screws included with the hinges to attach the doors to the cupboards.
