How to Replace a Gas Wall Oven

Wall ovens are convenient space savers and the use of gas as a fuel makes them even more efficient than the electric models. Gas ovens that builders installed in the 1950s might still work but they definitely show their age in design. When you are ready to remodel your kitchen, you will need to replace that old gas oven. The removal is basically the reverse of the installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Bench/table
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • New gas valves

Instructions

Turn off the gas either at the tank or at the valve where the gas enters the house. You do not want any gas escaping into the room while you are working on this project. Turn on the oven briefly to use up any residual gas in the line.

    • 2

Turn off the power to the wall oven. You should have a marked breaker in your electrical box that is either specifically for the oven or for the kitchen in general. Once you think the power is off, try turning on the oven to make sure.

    • 3

Bring a table or bench close to the work area for loading the wall oven on when you pull it away from the wall.

    • 4

Remove the door from the front of the oven. Different models have different hardware but they usually involve opening the door completely and pulling the hinge locks forward on either side. Close the door halfway and lift out of the mount.

    • 5

Locate the mounting screws around the perimeter of the oven and unscrew them as you go, using a screwdriver. Typically, there are four mounting screws, two on either side. Sometimes they are hard to locate, but as you pull on the oven, you should be able to feel where the resistance is coming from.

Pull the oven from the cavity slowly. Have a helper work with you to unscrew the gas line at the back of the oven, using a pair of pliers, and the electrical outlet or wire. Remove the wall oven completely.

To install the new oven, start by connecting the gas line with new valves. Wire the leads or insert the plug into the outlet at the back of the opening. Slide the oven into the space until the front is flush with the cabinet. Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws and screw the oven in place. Turn on the electricity and then the gas. Slide the oven door into the hinges and close the door. Test both gas and electricity to be certain they're working properly.
