How to Design a Windowless Sink

A kitchen or bathroom without a window can create a design challenge for homeowners. Not only does the window bring in natural light, a window opens the room to the outside. For a kitchen, in particular, the absence of a window is a major consideration when designing the layout. When a window isn't possible, call on your creativity to bring the open feeling that a window usually provides to your windowless space.

Instructions

Measure the dimensions of the walls of the room. Transfer the measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper using a pencil, ruler and straight edge. Draw in the location of existing cabinets, fixtures and appliances.

Tape tracing paper over the existing floor plan. Draw in the walls of the room. Look at the room without the cabinets and determine if there is enough room to install an island. Often an island or peninsula is the best solution for a kitchen without windows. When the sink is placed facing the seating area of an island, it won't feel closed in even though it doesn't have a window view.

Sketch several different floor plan options arranging your cabinets in different positions to see which option gives you the best working triangle and layout. Once you have a design, clear the garage floor or driveway and use painter's tape on the floor to mark out the walls and cabinet layout per your drawing. By constructing a mock-up you can walk around the space to see if it works properly in real life. Repeat this process a few times until you achieve the layout that works best.

Request specifications from companies that do specialty television installations for the wall depth and space necessary if you are forced to position a sink against a windowless wall. Install the television behind glass or a mirror to protect the electronics from water. This type of installation can create a view or point of interest over the sink to minimize the lack of a window.
