How to Add a Glass Cabinet Door in a Kitchen With Mirror Mounting Hardware

Cabinets take on a new dimension when you exchange the plain solid front for a glass pane. Using mirror mounting hardware is a simple way to hang the glass in the door opening. Cabinet doors with a raised or indented panel are the easiest to work with since the lines for cutting are already in place. However, even flat panel doors are not that difficult to work with if you mark the lines well and cut evenly. The mirror clips hold the glass snug against the door and are invisible from the outside.

  Remove the cabinet door from the cabinet by unscrewing the hinge. Inspect the door to see how the cabinetmaker put the door together. You may be able to cut through a glued joint instead of cutting.

  Drill a hole through the bottom corner of the framed area of the cabinet. This will serve as the entry point for your jigsaw blade so make it wide enough.

  Place the jigsaw blade through the drilled out hole and slowly cut out the interior of the cabinet door. Hold the saw vertical to keep from scratching up the outer finished surface of the cabinet door.

  Clean up the inside edge of the cutout area using 250-grit sandpaper. Coat with a similar stain and finish to match the rest of the cabinet according to the manufacturer’s directions. Dry completely.

  Lay the cabinet face down on a work surface. Lay the glass panel over the opening and pencil mark the position of the mirror mounting clips on the wood of the cabinet door. Use at least two clips on the bottom and two on either side spaced evenly apart.

  Remove the glass panel and drill pilot holes for the mirror mounting clips using the length of the screw as a guide for depth. Mark the depth on the drill bit with a piece of masking tape. Screw the mirror clips in place, leaving them loose for fitting in the glass.

  Place a thin bead of silicone glue around the perimeter of the glass. Slide the glass into position with the caulked side down, and gently tighten the screws in the mounting hardware so as not to crack the glass.

  Hang the cabinet door back in place by screwing the hinges back together.
