How to Elevate Cabinets

One of the great ways to open up your kitchen layout is to elevate the cabinets, giving more space that can be utilized above the counters. Counter space is critical for kitchens to provide adequate working areas for food preparation as well as storage. Adding a few extra inches to your cabinet height allows for the storage of taller items on the counters, such as food processors, espresso machines or stand mixers. The elevation of cabinetry is a straightforward job that relies heavily on basic manual labor, uses minimal equipment and takes relatively little time.

Instructions

Remove any items from all the cabinetry to be elevated from its current positions. Uninstall the cabinets themselves by removing all the current screws with a drill or by loosening all the current nuts with a socket wrench. Label the position of each cabinet in pencil in an inconspicuous portion of the shelf as you take it off. This will make the installation of the cabinets more convenient.

    • 2

Measure down from each hole in the rear of the cabinets by the distance you wish to raise your shelves. Keep a uniform measurement for all the holes, and mark these distances clearly with an "X" symbol for greater accuracy, keeping the center of the "X" on the distance point. Take great care to ensure these measurements are made directly down from the original hole, perpendicular to the ground.

Drill new holes at each marking location, using a drill bit that makes the same-size hole as the original holes. Position the cabinets on the wall in their original locations, and attach them with the same method that was used for their initial installation.
