How to Repaint Cabinets With Spray Lacquer

If you've ever handled a paint sprayer before, you can use one to make short work of refinishing any wooden cabinetry in your home with lacquer paint. Before you refinish any wood surface, you must strip the original finish so you aren't left with a big mess at the end of the project. Most wood finishes, such as varnish or polyurethane, will protect the wood by repelling moisture. This means that an application of lacquer paint over these finishes will most likely peel off shortly after you spray it on.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Medium grade sandpaper
  • Hand-held orbital sander (optional)
  • Fine grade sandpaper
  • Clean cloths

Instructions

    • 1

Take the doors off the cabinets and set them on a flat surface. Place the cabinets on a flat surface so the backs are facing up.

    • 2

Sand the cabinets down with medium grade sandpaper to strip the old finish. A hand-held orbital sander may be used to make the work go faster. Sand the cabinets a second time with fine grade sandpaper.

    • 3

Wipe the cabinets with a damp cloth. Mix the lacquer as directed by the manufacturer and pour it into the tank of a paint sprayer. Aim the paint sprayer at a piece of scrap wood and pull the trigger to do a few test sprays until you get used to handling the sprayer.

    • 4

Hold the sprayer about 12 inches from the surface of the cabinets. Start spraying at one edge and work your way to the opposite side with one continuous stream of lacquer. Release the trigger, then make another line across the surface of the wood, overlapping the first line slightly to ensure full coverage.

    • 5

Repeat this process for every surface of the cabinets and cabinet doors until they are completely coated in lacquer. Allow the lacquer to dry completely. Lightly sand the surface of the lacquer to smooth out any imperfections, then wipe the cabinets with a damp cloth.

    • 6

Allow the cabinets to dry. Apply one more coat of lacquer using the same method you used earlier. Wait for the cabinets to dry before reassembling them.
