DIY End Grain Wood Countertop

End grain countertops, also known as butcher block countertops, are made of the ends of wooden planks that are glued together. These types of countertops stand up to cutting and chopping better than other kinds of wooden countertops. Making your own end grain countertop includes cutting apart end pieces and gluing them together. After the pieces are glued in place you have to sand it smooth. This is one of the simplest kinds of woodworking projects to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide the length and width you want for the countertop. Calculate the size of each piece of end wood you’ll need for the countertop. Most end grain countertops are about 2 inches thick with 1- to 2-inch-thick pieces of end grain. Measure out and mark each cut with the chalk on the wood before you cut it.

Put on the goggles and cut the wood into the proper size for your countertop. Cut along the chalk lines.

Apply wood glue to the side of a piece of end wood and press it against a second piece. Make sure the end faces of both pieces of wood are facing up when you glue them together. Tighten the clamp around the two pieces of wood to hold them in place while the glue dries. Allow each section of wood to dry for 10 to 15 minutes before gluing the next one. Repeat this process until the entire countertop is glued together.

Place the sandpaper into the sander and sand the surface and corners of the countertop until they are smooth and even.
