How to Connect a Zinc Ring to a Pipe Under the Sink

The metal flange, directly underneath your sink, is a metal ring that is attached to the drain pipes. This ring is commonly made of zinc, but can also be made of other types of metal. If you notice that the ring is rusted or cracked, then you can replace it with a zinc ring part. Connecting the ring is a simple process, and a new zinc ring can be purchased from a home improvement store or online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door below your sink, and turn the water supply valve to the “Off” position.

    • 2

Unfasten the plastic attachment ring above your garbage disposal, if you have one, or P-trap pipe, using a pipe wrench.

    • 3

Disconnect the top pipe connected to the bottom of your sink, then locate the metal ring directly at the bottom of the sink, which is the zinc ring.

    • 4

Turn the zinc ring at the bottom of the sink counterclockwise using channel-lock pliers, then remove the ring.

    • 5

Insert a new zinc ring part into the same position, and turn the ring clockwise with the pliers.

Reconnect the top pipe, then reconnect the P-trap or garbage disposal to the bottom end of the top pipe. Turn the water supply valve back to the “On” position.
