How to Create Stainless Steel Countertops for an Island

Stainless steel countertops are heat-proof, scratch resistant and will not rust. While you can purchase solid stainless steel countertops from any home repair store, the cost can add up very fast. If you want a tough stainless steel countertop without the expense, it’s time to make your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your island and add an extra inch on every side for the overhang.

    • 2

Purchase a solid wood block such as maple or oak from a home repair center. Have the block cut to your specified size.

    • 3

Purchase a 16-gauge stainless steel sheet from a local steel distributor and also have it cut to size.

    • 4

Position the wood block onto your island cabinetry. Secure it in place with L brackets positioned on the inside corners. Make sure the screws you are using are at least 1/4 inch shorter than the solid wood block.

    • 5

Set the steel sheet onto the top of the wood block.

    • 6

Secure the sheet down with the metal table edging. The edging has a groove that holds the stainless steel in place and another that clasps onto the wood.

    • 7

Secure the edging with nails placed every 6 inches.
