How to Install a Postform Countertop

Being inexpensive, postform laminate countertops are common in many homes. The countertops are also simple for homeowners to install on their own. The easiest way to purchase and cut postform countertops is to measure your kitchen cabinetry first. Bring the measurements to a home improvement center to have the countertop to size for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Transfer the measurements from the old countertops to the new postform countertops. If you are installing countertops for the first time, you will need to measure the cabinets. Use a measuring tape to measure the top area of the base cabinets. Mark the measurements on the bottom, unlaminated side of the postform countertop as well as the laminated side of the countertop with a pencil.

    • 2

Place clear packaging tape over the pencil markings on the laminated side of the countertop. The tape will keep the laminate from chipping as it is cut.

    • 3

Turn the postform countertop over so the decorative edge is facing down. Cut the postform countertop to size with a circular saw. Work slowly so you do not chip or damage the laminate surface.

    • 4

Screw buildup strips to the top of the cabinet sides with a screwdriver and screws. The strips should be ¾-by-1½ inches and should be placed 1½ inches from the front of the cabinets. The edges of the buildup strips will overhang the cabinet side tops. These overhangs will allow you to screw the countertop in place. Buildup strips are necessary so the cabinet drawers still open when the postform countertops are installed.

    • 5

Lift the countertop in place with the help of a friend. You may need to scribe the postform countertops for a good fit. Apply a piece of masking tape to the edge of the countertop. Use a scribing tool to scribe the edge of the countertop to fit the wall. Remove the countertop and sand it with an electric hand sander and sandpaper until you have removed the scribed area. Repeat as necessary.

    • 6

Attach the postform countertop to the cabinets. Set the countertop in place. Under the countertop, place screws through the buildup strips and screw the postform countertop in place. You should be able to use 1½ inch screws. However, it is best to check that the screws will not go through the decorative laminate on top of the countertop before screwing them in place.

    • 7

Cut the sink hole for the countertop. Use the template provided by the sink to mark the countertop. Place clear packaging tape over the laminated side that is marked. Use a drill and drill bit to make a hole in each of the four corners of the sink template. Place a jigsaw into one of the holes and cut out the sink hole.

    • 8

Install the sink per manufacturer directions.

    • 9

Cover the edges of the countertop with an end cap kit to match. Follow the directions on the end cap kit.
