How to Finish Tumbled Stone Backsplashes

Tumbled stone tiles are natural stone tiles that have been placed in a mechanized drum full of rocks and rolled, or tumbled, until they've achieved a worn, aged look. Tumbled stone tiles can be used for floors, bathroom tiles and kitchen backsplashes. When it comes to stonework, the finish is the final stage where you apply a sealant to protect the surface of the stone. Sealants are especially important if your tumbled stone backsplash is made of a particularly porous rock, such as slate. A stone sealant will enhance the tumbled stone's natural colors, provide a protective layer against grease and dirt, and create a smoother surface that repels water and is easy to wipe down.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a drop cloth over the counter, sink and stove to protect them while you work.

    • 2

Pour some sealer onto a clean, white cloth. Rub the sealant into the stone, starting with the top of the backsplash, working your way down. Move the cloth in a circular motion to ensure the sealant penetrates the pores of the stone. Re-wet the cloth as needed.

    • 3

Leave the sealant on the stone for 10 minutes to further absorb into the stone. Then, wipe any extra sealant off with another clean cloth. Let the sealant sit undisturbed for two to three hours.

    • 4

Apply a second coat of sealant for the tumbled stone backsplashes. Follow the same application and drying steps as before. Let the backsplash dry completely and cure for 24 hours.
