Can One Remove Granite Countertops?

While granite adds an elegant and expensive look to a kitchen, the stone counters do not fit every home. A darker color can overwhelm a room while a lighter color disappears into the background. Granite might look dated, especially if a previous homeowner installed a cheaper version or stone that doesn't go with your decor. Removing the old granite is something that anyone can do.
  1. Types of Counters

    • Granite typically appears on counters in one of two ways: granite slab or tiles. Granite slab consists of large, thick pieces attached to the existing counters in your home. The installer measures the size of the counters and cuts the granite to the right shape and size for a custom fit. Using granite tiles involves applying a layer of tile adhesive to the counters and pressing the tiles into the glue. Grout applied over the tiles keeps the granite from slipping and sliding.

    Considerations

    • When you remove the granite counters, you must turn off the main water line or the water line that runs to any plumbing in the kitchen. As you tear out the old materials, you risk accidentally puncturing or damaging one of the water lines, which can result in water spraying all over the room. You should also remove the sink, which is either glued or screwed into the counter. If you have a backsplash and want to save it, remove the old glue and pry each tile off of the wall.

    Removing Granite Slab

    • Granite slab typically has small screws located underneath the counters. If you cannot locate any screws, the installer glued the pieces to the counter. A sledgehammer is strong enough that when you hit the counter, it will break the granite into smaller pieces. Goggles are recommended for eye protection from the smaller pieces of granite while an old tarp on the floor can catch any loose pieces. Keep in mind that this method is only suitable if you want the cabinets removed because you might break the wood with the sledgehammer. Granite slab is heavy; and if you remove it in one piece, you will need help.

    Removing Granite Tiles

    • It is possible to remove granite tiles without damaging the counters and cabinets underneath. The edge of a crowbar placed under the tiles can loosen them up. If you apply tile adhesive remover under the tiles, the remover softens the adhesive, which allows the tiles to come loose. Using a crowbar or pry bar, along with adhesive remover, ensures that you remove the tiles without damaging the granite. Cleaning off any glue residue gives you a smooth surface for applying new tile.
