Do It Yourself Kitchen Banquets

Kitchen banquets are interior decorating designs that can become do-it-yourself projects. Banquets provide extra storage and create cozy dining areas with padded seats. With table seating against a wall or in front of a window, kitchen banquets increase the usable space in a small kitchen area. You can create a kitchen banquet yourself by building from scratch or by using prefabricated cabinets or chests.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your kitchen banquet, including the type of padded seat or cushions you will use on the banquet. The height of the seat portion of the banquet depends upon the depth of the cushions used on the seat. The standard height of a dining chair is 18 inches from the floor to the top of the cushion.

    • 2

Build your banquet to your own specifications to fit a corner or to create window seating. When your banquet includes under-the-seat storage, make the storage lid, which is part of the seat, narrower than the overall depth of the seat to allow lifting the seat while the back cushion remains in place.

Use premanufactured cabinets or chests to create your kitchen banquet. A banquet can be as simple as a chest placed against the wall with a dining table placed in front of it. Traditionally, two or more free-standing chairs are used with the banquet to allow seating on all sides of the table.

Transform window seats into banquettes by placing a table in front of the seats.

Cover high-density foam with a heavy-duty fabric, such as sunbrella fabric, for durable, attractive cushions. For comfortable cushions with the support needed while dining, use 3- to 4-inch-deep, foam cushion forms. For best results, take careful measurements, including any angled areas. Cut newspaper patterns and test the fit before cutting your fabric.
