How to Cut for an Undermount Kitchen Sink

Undermount sinks integrate seamlessly with counter tops and look like they are built into the counter rather than fastened to the bottom of it. This integrated look is due to the cut of the counter top; the cut allows the counter to hide the lip of the sink. Undermount sinks come with a template that serves as a guide for the cut. If you don't have a template, contact the sink manufacturer and have one sent for the make and model of your sink.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the counter top on a set of sawhorses. Make sure the counter is face up.

    • 2

Secure the undermount sink template to the counter top with painter's tape. Make sure the template is centered on the portion of the counter top that is, or will be, directly above the sink cabinet. There must also be an adequate amount of clearance above the template for the faucet.

    • 3

Trace around the template with a pencil. Then remove the template.

    • 4

Put on safety goggles. Plug the circular saw into the power outlet.

    • 5

Create a starter hole inside the pencil outline with an electric drill. Make sure the hole is big enough for the saber saw blade to enter. Then insert the blade of the saber saw into the starter hole. With medium pressure, guide it over to the pencil outline and cut the hole.

    • 6

Sand the cut edges in the counter with medium-grit sandpaper. You should now be ready to install the sink.
