How to Build a Brick Pass-Through in a Kitchen

A well-done kitchen remodel is one of the best investments you can make in a home. A carefully planned and applied restoration creates not just a more modern space but one that is more efficient for meal preparation. Adding a pass-through increases this efficiency by reducing time spent ferrying food from the kitchen to the adjacent dining room. Such an addition is one that requires some knowledge of carpentry to complete properly; it usually takes one to two days to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area. Clear any debris or wall-hanging items from the area. Lay drop cloths or tarps over the floor on both sides of the wall intended for demolition. These will protect the floors from damage and simplify cleanup.

    • 2

Mark the area for removal. Use a pencil and straightedge to outline the wall area intended for removal. Planning is essential for this project to prevent structural damage or risking the integrity of the wall.

    • 3

Remove the wall. Use a crowbar to pry away the baseboards around the work area and a box cutter to score the drywall within the outlined area. Remove the drywall with a hammer or crowbar.

Install cabinets. Lower cabinets, base cabinets, will serve as the base of a pass-through and support the countertop. Reusing existing cabinets is the most inexpensive option, or purchasing premade varieties from a home improvement or hardware store is ideal for adding cabinets. Screw the cabinets directly into the wall studs. Use a level to ensure the cabinetry is installed correctly.

Fit and install countertops. The specific installation process will vary greatly depending on the type of countertop. Dimensions will be similar no matter the material but are adaptable for personal preference or need. The specific amount of countertop overhang for the pass-through will vary depending on personal preference but on average is between 5 and 6 inches.
