How to Install New Cabinet Facings

Refacing your cabinets gives your room an entirely new look and can save you thousands of dollars. Generally, refacing entails replacing the cabinet doors and covering the exposed cabinet frame with veneer. Order a refacing kit from your local home builder's supply store. This project can be accomplished from start to finish in about one weekend. Even if you have very little woodworking knowledge, you should be able to successfully transform your cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Back out the screws holding the cabinet doors to the frame with a drill and Phillips driving bit. Moisten a rag with trisodium phosphate cleaner and wipe down the entire frame. Allow the cleaner to dry. Sand the frame with a 150-grit sandpaper and wipe off the dust with a tack cloth.

    • 2

Lay a side panel face down on a flat surface. Squeeze a generous amount of wood glue onto the panel's back side. Lift the side panel up to the cabinet frame's side and press it on. Line up the front and bottom edges. Hammer 2d finishing nails through the plywood to hold it to the cabinet frame. Repeat this step on the cabinet frame's other side.

    • 3

Measure the first stile's (the cabinet frame's horizontal bar) length and width. Add 2 inches to the length measurement and 1/2 inch to the width measurement. Transfer these numbers to a piece of veneer.

    • 4

Cut the veneer to the appropriate length and width using a utility knife and a level as a straight edge. Lift the veneer strip up to the first stile and position it so it extends slightly past the stile on each side. Peel the paper backing about 2 inches down and press the adhesive against the stile. Peel more paper backing down while you press the veneer into place. Work your way down the stile.

    • 5

Trim off the extra veneer along the stile's sides with a utility knife, using the cabinet frame as a guide. Apply more veneer to the cabinet frame's remaining stiles.

    • 6

Measure the width and length of the cabinet frame's rail between the first two stiles. Add 2 inches to the length measurement and 1 inch to the width measurement. Cut a piece of veneer to match these measurements.

    • 7

Center the veneer strip between the stile strips and press it into place the same way you applied the stile strips. Hold a level against one of the stile's inner edges and overlap it across the rail strip. Cut along the level's straight edge through both the rail strip and the stile strip. Repeat on the other stile's inner edge.

    • 8

Peel off the cut-off portion of the rail veneer. Peel the rail veneer back slightly and remove the cut-off portion of the stile veneer.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 6 through 8 on the cabinet frame's remaining rails.

    • 10

Mount the cabinet hardware onto the new cabinet doors using the supplied screws. Hold each cabinet door in its proper location on the cabinet frame. Secure the cabinet hardware to the frame with the supplied screws.
