How to Add an Eat-In Bar to a Half Wall

An eat-in bar can offer a convenient space for your family to gather for breakfast or a casual dinner without the need for a dining table. This can help save space, which is particularly important if you have a small kitchen. A half-wall can provide a stable base for an eat-in bar -- you can use the frame of a half-wall to reduce construction time and save on the cost of materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry the cap off of the top of the half-wall with a pry bar. This will expose the top frame plate of the half-wall, which will serve as the support for the eat-in bar.

    • 2

Measure the length of the half-wall with a measuring tape. Cut two sections of 1/2-inch-thick pine or hardwood to this length with a table saw.

    • 3

Cut both sections of the pine or hardwood to a width of 24 inches with a table saw.

    • 4

Center one section of pine or hardwood on the half-wall. Drill pairs of pilot holes, about 2 inches apart, through the lumber into the top frame plate at 4-inch intervals with a drill. Insert and tighten 4-inch wood screws through the lumber into the top plate of the half-wall frame with an electric screwdriver.

    • 5

Apply wood glue to the top of the attached pine or hardwood section. Place the second section on top of the first and align the edges. Press down on the second lumber section to allow the glue to bond. Tighten C-clamps along the edges and let the glue dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Sand the top and edges of the pine or hardwood sections with a palm sander to smooth surfaces and round corners and edges. Paint or stain the bar top as desired.
