How to Install an Undermount Sink for Wooden Countertops

Undermount sinks anchor to wood counters with a layer of silicone caulk and metal hangers that attach to bolts. The mounting clips come with the undermount sink, and the sink’s manufacturer includes directions about the exact placement of the clips on the sink’s lip. If you do not leave the sink alone for enough time after the installation, the sink later will separate from the counter, causing the drainpipes to buckle and leak water into the room below.

Things You'll Need

  • Silicone caulk
  • Wood board
  • Bar clamps
  • Two-part epoxy

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the sink under the cutout in the counter to ensure the cutout is the right size. Slide the sink around to find the fit that you prefer, and then remove the sink.

    • 2

Spread an even bead of silicone caulk around the upper lip of the undermount sink. Press the sink against the underside of the counter where you decided to position it before.

    • 3

Lay a board across the sink cutout in the counter. Place bar clamps on the board and feed the other end of the clamp through the sink’s drain holes, attaching them to the underside of the sink. Tighten the clamps to hold the sink in place.

    • 4

Mix a two-part epoxy and apply it to the end of the bolts on the sink’s mounting clips. Position the clips so they sit over the edge of the sink, and then press the epoxy-covered end of the bolts against the underside of the counter.

    • 5

Hold the bolts in place for five minutes, allowing the epoxy to cure. Remove the clamps and the board from the sink after it has sat undisturbed for 24 hours.
