How to Cut a Recycled Glass Counter Top

Old bottles and jars go on to become all sorts of things, including composite countertops that have the look and feel of granite, sometimes with shards of colorful glass giving it a mosaic-like appearance. When mixed with resins, the glass is shatterproof, and may be handled like stone. Recycled-glass countertop manufacturers recommend having a professional cut and install them, but if you have a diamond cutting saw, a wet table saw designed for cutting tile and stone, it's possible to do it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your recycled glass countertop and draw a straight cut line, using an L-square as a guide.

    • 2

Place the countertop on the diamond cutting saw's table. Slide it to the left until it butts up against the saw's fence.

    • 3

Adjust the cutting blade to the left or right until it lines up with the cut line.

    • 4

Slide the countertop away from the saw blade a few inches and turn on the diamond cutting saw. The water should begin to flow over the blade as the blade spins. Allow the water to run about 10 seconds, or until the blade is thoroughly wet.

    • 5

Put on safety glasses. Press the countertop against the fence and slowly push it forward into the blade. Your hands should be positioned several inches to the left and right of the blade.

    • 6

Push the countertop forward gently and steadily. When the cut passes the halfway mark, hold the halves of the cut ends together so the weight doesn't cause the uncut section to bend and break.

    • 7

Slide the cut countertop to the right slightly and pull it back toward you before turning off the saw.
