DIY Wood Projects With Trash Can Cabinets

Keeping your trash can visible in the kitchen can be unappetizing and make your kitchen look cluttered and messy. Some kitchens come with a built-in cabinet in which to store your trash out of sight. If your kitchen doesn't have one, you can create your own. It doesn't have to be built-in. Instead, you can make a freestanding cabinet so you can take it with you if you move.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from a stock cabinet and set it aside to reinstall later.

    • 2

Measure the top and sides of the cabinet to determine what size to cut the cabinet plywood.

    • 3

Cut the plywood pieces to cover the unfinished sides of the stock cabinet.

    • 4

Nail the plywood pieces onto the sides and top of the stock cabinet.

    • 5

Turn the cabinet upside down and drill holes into the bottom corners to mount the feet. Screw on the mounting brackets for the feet.

    • 6

Screw the furniture feet into the mounting brackets.

    • 7

      Flip the cabinet right-side up.

    • 8

Measure the inside of the opening for the cabinet, as well as the depth of the cabinet.

    • 9

Cut a piece of the 2-by-12-inch board to fit through the opening to create a new floor for the cabinet. The board should measure the width of the opening, minus 1 inch, by the depth of the cabinet, minus 1 inch.

    • 10

Reinstall the door using new hinges along the bottom of the door instead of the sides. Use a drill to predrill the holes for the hinges. The door should open outward.

    • 11

Attach the new floor board to the cabinet door with the L-brackets, centering it carefully along the bottom edge of the door.

    • 12

Measure the distance from the back of the floor board to the halfway point up the side of the cabinet doors. Cut pieces of 1-by-2-inch board to fit this distance. Cut the ends at an angle so the pieces of wood attach to the door and the floor.

    • 13

Nail the 1-by-2-inch pieces into place on either side of the floor board.

    • 14

Open the door as far as you want it to open to use it. Make sure it opens far enough where you can pull the trash can in and out. Mark the position of the back corners of the floor board inside the cabinet.

    • 15

Cut two 3-inch pieces of the 1-by-2-inch boards.

    • 16

Nail the 3-inch blocks at the marks you made. These blocks stop the door from opening too far.

    • 17

Stain the outside of the cabinet to match your other cabinets. You also may want to stain the floor board.
