How to Attach Particle Board Countertops

Particle board is constructed of loose wood shavings and pieces which have been compressed and fastened together with adhesive. The resulting material is a low cost, easily workable sheet, used in many building applications. Particle board countertops are typically installed atop kitchen cabinets, then coated with a laminate finish which repels water, and creates a modern and uniform appearance. The process of attaching particle board countertops in your kitchen requires some basic tools, and minimal DIY skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount 1 1/2 inch "L"-shaped angle brackets around the perimeter of your cabinet frames. The brackets should be installed so that one leg sits flush against the cabinet wall, and the other projects outward at the top of the cabinet. These brackets will serve as the mounting anchors for your particle board countertop. Use your screw gun and 5/8-inch wood screws to mount each bracket in place. Space each bracket about 12 inches apart around the entire perimeter.

    • 2

Lay your particle board countertop onto the cabinets where it will be mounted. Shift the countertop until it is resting in the proper position, then use you level to ensure that all is flush from one end to the other, and from front to back.

    • 3

Put pressure on all parts of the countertop surface. If the particle board shifts, or exhibits any play at all, reposition it so that it is completely steady. Use small wooden shims, placed between the top of the cabinet frames, and the underside of the countertop to make the fit solid. Break off any excess wood so it does not show outside of the cabinet.

Open the cabinet doors and position yourself so that you can clearly see the underside of the countertop. Use your screw gun and 5/8-inch wood screws to fasten the countertop to your angle brackets. Each screw you install you pull the countertop down firmly, and lock it in place atop your cabinets.
