How to Install a Stove Into a Kitchen Island

Installing a stove into a kitchen island is not much different than installing one along a wall. Once you have a plumber or electrician provide the hookups required for a gas or an electric stove, you are ready to install the stove into your kitchen island. Installing the stove takes only a few hours, which means you can cook on your new stove the same night.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power circuit that feeds the island. If you have an electric stove, turn off the power to the stove circuit. The stove should have its own circuit that is not shared with anything else.

    • 2

Install a new power cord to your new stove. Stoves do not come with power cords, because some homes have three-prong outlets and some have four-prong outlets. Cords are sold where you buy stoves as well as at home improvement or hardware stores. Attach the new cord according to the manufacturer's directions, using a screwdriver to tighten the screws to the wires.

    • 3

Plug in the stove if it is electric. If it is gas, attach the gas supply hose installed by a plumber to the fitting on the back of the stove. Make sure these connections are tight so they do not leak, but be careful not to overtighten and damage the threads.

Slide the stove into place, leaving a narrow, even gap on either side of the stove. Place the level on the stove and see what adjustments, if any, need to be made. Lift up the front of the stove an inch or two so you can access the feet at the front of the stove. Twist these feet to make adjustments, and level the stove.

Turn the circuit breaker back on for an electric stove. For a gas stove, slide the stove out a bit, and turn on the gas at the valve behind the stove. Also, plug the gas stove into an electrical outlet. The power supplied to a gas stove is for the clock and sometimes for the pilotless ignition systems. Slide the stove back into place, and test the burners and oven.
