How to Refinish Rusticware Cabinet Hardware

Rusticware cabinet hardware comes in a variety of different colors and finishes. Over time however, this finish can wear off. In addition, if the hardware was painted at one time, you may be dealing with chipped or worn paint. You can refinish this hardware back to its original color, or strip it down so that you can paint it the color of your choosing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hardware from the doors with a screwdriver. Place the screws in a plastic bag to keep them together.

    • 2

Soak the hardware in a slow-cooker with water and dish soap. Turn the slow-cooker on medium and wait a few hours. Check the hardware. If some stubborn paint remains, let it soak a little longer.

    • 3

Dry off the hardware with a soft cloth. Make sure you get into tiny nooks and crannies and that the entire piece is dry.

    • 4

Line up the hardware on a cardboard sheet. It is best to do this outside to avoid over-spraying.

    • 5

Spray-paint the hardware with a metal paint. Use the color of your choice. Spray on a light coating. If necessary, flip the hardware over and coat the other side. Let this coat dry for four to six hours. Apply a second coat if necessary and allow to dry completely.

Reattach the hardware with a screwdriver. Replace the handles back on the door and tighten the screws.
