How to Replace Kitchen Cabinet Interiors With Laminate

Instead of refinishing the interior of cabinets with old-fashioned, time consuming sanding and painting, add a new layer of laminate. The interior of daily-use cabinets such as those that hold cups, plates or cleaning supplies may become scratched and scarred. You can sand away the interior finish and add several new coats of varnish or paint. But opting for a layer of laminate can save you time and often money on the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove doors and shelves from the cabinets; some shelves are not removable. Use a screwdriver to remove the hinges.

    • 2

Sand the interior of the cabinet using a 220-grit sandpaper. This roughs it slightly and prepares it for the laminate. Prepare the shelves in the same manner.

    • 3

Measure the areas of the cabinet, beginning with the bottom. Measure width and length. Measure the sides and then the top, bottom and edges of the shelves.

    • 4

Cut self-adhesive laminate to fit the measurements using a tin snips.

    • 5

Peel off the back of the self-adhesive laminate, and align with the edge of the cabinet. Use a rolling pin to smooth it into place. For the sides, start at the bottom and roll with the rolling pin upward. For the bottom, roll front to back.

    • 6

Place a weighted object such as a clean brick or coffee can on or against the laid laminate to hold it in place. Allow it to press for several hours to ensure the laminate adhesive is dry. For a shelf edge, stand the shelf on the edge and balance until dry.
