Round vs. Square Cabinet Handles

One of the many choices the homeowner is faced with when choosing cabinet hardware is the handle shape. Round handles are a common choice because they are widely available and almost universally appealing. Square handles echo the lines of a square cabinet, which is appealing in certain decorating schemes. Choose handles carefully because you are likely to be living with them for a long time. Buy one or two handles; try them before making a commitment.
  1. Aesthetics

    • Consider your decorating style when determining the shape of cabinet pulls. The angular lines of square handles complement a sleek modern look, as well as Mission-style or Craftsman-style homes. Round handles work well in homes with a traditional, country or Victorian theme. In general, if your decorating style includes straight lines and simple, geometric shapes, consider square handles. Round handles complement almost any style, while square handles must be used with care. In the wrong setting, square handles can seem visually jarring.

    Use

    • When selecting knobs and handles for cabinets, consider their ease of use. Round knobs may feel more comfortable in the hand, while square knobs may have sharp edges. A round knob may be easier for a child or elderly person to open. Some people prefer pulls to knobs for opening drawers, although you probably want a knob for cabinets.

    Materials

    • Cabinet handles are made from a variety of materials, such as porcelain, glass, wood, stone, metal or plastic. Most materials can be made into either round or square shapes, although round shapes are more common. Edges may be stamped to provide a decorative trim or detail. Metal square handles are more likely to have sharp edges than square handles made from wood or plastic.

    Cost and Workmanship

    • Round handles are more widely available and may cost less than square types. Cabinet handles may range in price from under $2 to over $15 per handle, as of October, 2011. The difference in cost is usually due to more elaborate designs or costly materials, as well as the shape. When selecting handles, look for handles that are heavy for their size and made from solid materials. Plastic knobs painted to look like metal, for example, won't wear as well as an all-metal handle.
