Molding Ideas for Recessed Cabinets

Cabinetry with recessed-panel doors creates a picture frame look: There's a lip of trim work around the perimeter of the door and a recessed area in the middle. Adding trim work inside the recessed panel can add a focal point to the panels and either highlight the recessed portion of the panel or add elevated elements to the middle of the door.
  1. Beadboard

    • Beadboard is a millwork product made of extruded polystyrene beads glued, compressed and milled into a rigid form of specific dimensions. Beadboard may have a tongue-and-groove assembly with beads that are milled into the surface to cover up the joints. It is available in a variety of sizes, with the thickness ranging from three-eighths of an inch to three-quarters of an inch or thicker. Cut a beadboard panel to fit inside the recessed area of your panels. You can stain or paint beadboard to match your cabinets for a seamless look.

    Rope Molding

    • Rope molding is aptly named since it is carved in a manner that makes it look like twisted rope. Add roping around all four sides of each recessed panel to add character and an intricate addition to your panels.

    Split Spindle

    • Spindles are cylindrical decorative wood pieces. They are often long in size and placed on the side of cabinetry. Split spindles are hemispherical, half of the size of a typical spindle that you can use in conjunction with your recessed panels. Use two spindles, split in half, to flank the sides of the panels.

    Pilaster

    • Pilasters are commonly located on the outside edges of cabinetry. A pilaster is a vertical column that has defined ridges in it. Attach a pilaster to the center of your cabinet doors' recessed panels to add architectural detail to them.

    Panel Molding

    • Panel molding commonly forms panels on walls, but you can also use it with recessed door panels. Run thin paneling around the edges of the recessed panel to form a more defined break between the door's framing and the recessed portion of it.

    Dentil Molding

    • Dentil molding is a type of molding that has the appearance of tooth markings. This look is made by small blocks that are spaced close together but with small gaps in between them.

    Lattice Molding

    • Lattice molding replicates exterior lattice work. The crisscross effect of this molding can add detail and raised areas amid the recessed portion of the cabinet panel. It can also add a charming effect for a Tuscan-themed or villa-styled kitchen.
