Why Formica Has Soft Spots on Countertops?

If there are soft spots on your Formica countertop, there is a gap between the Formica sheet and the actual counter. While it is important to understand what went wrong, learning how to fix the problem is more important. Removing and reinstalling the Formica is your only course of action if you have soft spots in your countertop.
  1. Most Common Causes

    • Improper installation is the most likely reason there are soft spots in the Formica, particularly if the Formica sheeting was recently installed. This ranges from air pockets left after laying the sheeting to insufficient coverage with the contact cement. If the Formica is old, it is possible that the contact cement has simply eroded.

    Removing the Formica

    • Removing the Formica is the most time-consuming part of this project. Work slowly to avoid snapping the Formica or damaging the countertop. Several very thin putty knives are needed, which for sliding under the Formica, lifting it off the counter. As you separate the Formica from the counter, slide shims between the two surfaces so you can get solvent, such as lacquer thinner, on the contact cement. This helps dissolve the adhesive so you can continue severing the bond. Add larger-sized shims as you work until you get the Formica sheet off the countertop.

    Stripping the Contact Cement

    • Once the Formica has been lifted off the countertop, remove all of the dried contact cement. Apply solvent and use a paint scraper or razor blade to remove as much adhesive as possible. Then sand both surfaces until they are smooth.

    Reinstalling the Formica

    • Ensure that the back of the Formica and the top of the counter are completely coated with contact cement. Apply the adhesive with a paintbrush and work with a team to lay the sheet down. There is no room for error because the Formica has already been sized to exactly fit the countertop. Working slowly ensures the Formica is perfectly lined up on all edges. Use a laminate roller to roll out any air pockets and ensure full coverage.
