How to Make a Closet From Slanted Walls

Slanted walls can prove to be a problem in a home. It can be difficult to place furniture or to use the space effectively. One way to deal with the awkward space created by slanted walls is to put a closet in the space. This gives you a deeper closet on the bottom of the space, which allows you to store larger items, and a traditional amount of space at the top of the closet to hang clothes. This plan works if you are building the closet so it runs the same direction as the slanted wall and not perpendicular to it.

Instructions

Find the studs supporting the wall where you want to build your closet with a stud finder. Mark the center of each stud all along the wall for a full-length closet. Measure the distance between the ceiling and the floor and subtract 4 inches to measure the height of the studs. Measure from one wall to the next to find the length of the frame. If the wall is long you may want more than one closet door, and you may need to build more than one frame. Measure your bi-fold doors and add 2 inches to the both the height and width measurement for the doorframe.

    • 2

Cut the 2-by-4s for the wall frames with the circular saw. You need two pieces that are the length of the wall you are building. If you need to build more than one wall frame, then you should divide the distance in half, and you need two pieces for each wall frame you build. Cut enough stud pieces so that you can put one on each end of the wall frame and space them 16 inches apart along the frame. Cut one piece that is the width of the door for the top of the doorframe.

    • 3

Lay the pieces out and nail in the end pieces to make a square to begin framing the wall. The 4-inch side of the 2-by-4 should be flush with the ceiling and the floor. Hammer in two nails per side of each stud. Once you have created the four sides of the frame, make sure it is square, and nail each of the studs into place every 16 inches. Leave a space where you want your door to go, but put a stud on each side of the space. Nail in the piece for the top of the doorframe in at the correct height. Cut small pieces and nail them in every 16 inches between the top of the frame and the top of the door.

Put up the wall frame. Nail it into place along the studs you marked in the wall. Use a nail every 16 inches. Nail it into place in the ceiling jousts, or on each side of the studs, if it runs along a joust. Nail it into place along the floor on either side of each stud.

Screw the drywall into place at each stud using the drywall screws. Use a row along the top, and bottom and then one more row along the center. Hang drywall on both the interior and exterior of the closet. Use the drywall tape and cement to seal the seams between drywall pieces, and cover the screws. Allow it to dry, then sand it smooth. Paint the wall and the door frame that you have left exposed from the drywall.

Install the bi-fold closet door. Screw the track into the top of the doorframe. The track should come with the door. Attach the hinges, so the door hangs at least an inch above the ground, so it can open and close freely.

Finish the project by attaching the baseboards along the floor in both the exterior and interior of the closet. Put the trim up around the edge of the door frame, and hang the closet rod in the top of the closet.
