The Average Cost of Terrazzo Grinding

Terrazzo is a type of floor surface design to provide a layered, stone appearance at affordable costs. It is named after a town in Italy, and uses a number of different stone types including marble, granite and glass, all in small chips instead of as solid tiles or slabs. The chips are mixed together with a composite binding agent such as cement or epoxy, then spread and smoothed down over floors. Terrazzo floors can be sealed or ground down to change the way they look.
  1. Grinding

    • Terrazzo surfaces are installed as level surfaces. But when they are first cured, the chips often form a rough top layer despite best efforts, so a grinder or polisher is used to buff the chips down into a smooth form. As the terrazzo surface wears away through years of use, additional grinding can be used to repair and smooth the floor once again. When combined when sealers, grinding keeps the floor looking fresh and smooth. Companies charge for terrazzo grinding based on the square foot.

    Floor Costs

    • Floor costs range by contractor. On the lower end, you can expect terrazzo grinding to cost about $3 per square foot, as of publication. Higher prices are around double that, $6 per square foot for grinding or polishing work. A typical terrazzo floor installation costs around $12 per square foot, so choosing to grind down a floor and remodel it instead of fully replacing the floor can often save money.

    Variations

    • The $3-to-$6 dollar range is only a rough estimate. A key factor is the quality of the floor itself. If the floor is heavily damaged, or if is coated with wax that need to be removed before grinding, costs can be considerably higher. Additional services like expanding the floor or sealing it after grinding may also cost more. The materials originally used in the terrazzo floor will also have their impact.

    Machines

    • If you feel like tackling the terrazzo grinding process yourself you can purchase a terrazzo grinder. These grinders are similar to floor polishers, but they are more weighty and have much coarser grinding pads to wear away the stone. One of these machines costs around $1,400, without the diamond or graphite discs used for polishing. This may seem expensive, but it can be of benefit to business that does not mind caring for its own floors. Equipment rental services may have terrazzo grinders available to rent for varying prices.
