Measure the length of the wall frame you need to build. Then measure from the floor to the ceiling and subtract 4 inches to determine the height you need to cut the studs. Find and mark the stud on the existing wall(s) that you will attach the wall frame to. The wall frame needs to be attached to an existing stud; otherwise, it will not be stable.
Cut 2-by-4s with a circular saw. You will need two pieces that run the length of the wall. You will need to cut enough stud pieces so you have one on each end and spaced every 16 inches along the length of the wall. For example, a 12-foot wall would need 12 studs.
Build the frame by placing the top and bottom pieces and two of the studs on the ground to form a square. The 4-inch side of the wood should lay flat against the ceiling and the floor when the frame is finished. Nail the studs into place at either end. Use two nails per each side of the stud. Once you have built the outside portion of the frame, make sure the sides are square. Nail the remaining studs into place along the length of the wall spaced 16 inches apart.
Install the wall frame. Erect the wall frame in the correct spot. Nail it into the floor on either side of each stud, as well as the ceiling joists. Nail the frame into place along the existing wall stud you marked. Nail it into place every 18 inches from the floor up to the ceiling.
