How to Build Recessed Bookshelves

A recessed bookshelf not only provides a convenient storage place for your literary treasures, it also adds to the architectural interest of your home and gives you the opportunity to display accent pieces along with your books. If you have a recessed area, building one is as simple as cutting and hanging shelves. Otherwise, you can fake the look with pre-made units and molding.

Instructions

  1. Recessed Case

    • 1

Locate a niche or recessed area where you'd like to place your bookcase. Measure the distance between the studs or ends of the niche to figure out how long your bookcase shelves will measure.

    • 2

Cut planks of 4-inch by 6-inch wood to the measured distance. Cut as many pieces as you'd like for the case.

    • 3

Measure and mark where each shelf will sit against the wall. Allow for enough height between planks to accommodate taller books, about 10 to 15 inches, depending on your preference.

    • 4

Install L-shaped hanging brackets for each shelf. Install one on each end of where the shelf will sit. Install a third -- a middle bracket -- for extra support. Follow manufacturer instructions for proper attachment.

    • 5

Set the shelves atop the brackets, and check for a level, uniform alignment. Screw in place according to bracket directions.

    Faux Recessed Bookcase

    • 6

Measure the area you'd like the bookcase to span, both height and width. Purchase or find pre-made bookcases that will fill the space. Typically, you must fill an entire wall or area for the bookcases to actually appear built in.

    • 7

Remove the back paneling from each bookcase carefully -- using a hammer, screwdriver or chisel to remove nails or tacks.

    • 8

Line the bookcases against the wall, flush against one another. Screw them to one another and the wall for a secure hold.

    • 9

Cut crown molding to place along the seams between the units, as well as the bottom and top edges. Screw the crown molding onto the cases.

    • 10

Cut the crown molding and paneling to cover the area from the top of the bookcases to the ceiling. Measure the distance from the top of the bookcases to the ceiling, and install the paneling first.

    • 11

Install the crown molding between the bookcase and paneling, and between the paneling and ceiling, to create the illusion of a recessed bookcase built into the home's architecture.
