How to Convert Stands Into Home Bars

If you purchased a flat-screen TV, you might find that your old TV stand no longer serves a purpose, especially if the stand is in the form of an old entertainment hutch. Rather than give the piece of furniture away, repurpose it into a home bar and free up some space in your kitchen. You can also convert a short television stand into a home bar by connecting a cupboard to it for added height.

Instructions

  1. Converting a TV Stand in a Hutch

    • 1

Remove the doors from the front of the hutch by removing the hinges.

    • 2

Use wood filler in the holes that once occupied the screws that held the hinges in place. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth down the wood filler so it is flush with the rest of the wood.

    • 3

Paint over the wood filler with a color that matches the hutch. Alternatively, you can paint the entire hutch a different color after sanding out the current finish. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 4

Add under-cabinet wine glass racks inside the hutch under the thinner shelf where the electronic equipment sat or at the top of the furniture. Use a drill and the screws that come with the wine glass racks to secure them to your converted bar.

    • 5

Place stackable racks inside the converted TV stand so you can store your wine bottles and glassware. Take advantage of the vertical space inside the hutch for taller bottles of alcohol. If the entertainment center came with drawer, you can use those for storing stir sticks, coasters, napkins, bar snacks and nonbreakable snack bowls.

    Converting a Short TV Stand

    • 6

Make a TV stand and cabinet match by painting them the same color. Use sandpaper to remove the old finish from the furniture. If the cupboard has doors on it or there are drawers on the TV stand, remove them before you begin to paint. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 7

Connect the cupboard to the top of the TV stand by driving a 1-inch screw from the bottom of the cupboard into the top of the stand. Use one screw at each corner of the cupboard.

    • 8

Use the shelves within the cupboard for storing glasses and bottles. The storage or shelving area of the old TV stand may be ideal for keeping short glassware or nonbreakable items.
