How to Make Transoms Over Doors

In the old days, aspiring authors tried to get their manuscripts to an editor by throwing the manuscript into the editor's office through the transom above the office door. This practice gave rise to the literary phrase, 'over the transom,' meaning an unsolicited manuscript. While transoms originally provided rooms with much-needed ventilation, contemporary transoms are more about aesthetics and old world charm. You can add a decorative transom when you are remodeling your doorway if you have the right tools and moderate woodworking skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, height and width of the transom. Use these measurements to determine the transom's glass frame. Because every door is different, there is no specific formula for deriving the glass frame measurement. Decide how wide you prefer the glass frame to be based on your personal tastes and the aesthetics of the room. The glass frame should be substantial enough to securely hold the window, but not so big that it detracts from the transom's appearance.

    • 2

Cut your lumber to size using the transom measurements. Use a router table to make any decorative designs you may desire on the profile side. Use the router to cut a groove for the window. Create a cope joint on all sections. Apply wood glue to all joints, assemble the pieces into position and use bar clamps to secure them into place on a flat surface. Allow the wood glue to dry completely.

    • 3

Drill a hole into one end joint of the transom. Fill the hole with wood glue, then insert a wooden dowel that is the same size as the hole. Wipe off any excess glue, then cut the dowel off flush with the transom frame. Repeat this process on each of the other end joints. Sand the area smooth once the glue has dried.

    • 4

Measure halfway down the side of the transom frame. Drill a hole in the side of the frame and insert a spring pin. Repeat this process on the other side of the transom frame. Drill corresponding holes into the transom area of the door frame.

Lay the decorative glass in the groove that you made with the router. Secure the glass into the transom with several glazier's points along each length. Push the glazier's points securely into place using your painter's tool. Apply glazing to every place where the glass contacts wood. Allow the glazing to dry completely. Fit the transom into place above the door by pressing the spring pins into the holes in the door frame. Check for ease of rotation.
