Building a Wine Fridge Into a Cabinet

A wine fridge is a handy appliance to add to the home bar. This type of fridge is commonly deeper than other types of refrigerators since it needs to hold wine bottles stored lying on their sides. Building a wine fridge into a cabinet under the home bar requires a few steps to complete. Working carefully will result in a professional looking finish on this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cabinet door with a screwdriver by unscrewing the hinges. Take out the shelves in the cabinet. If they are nailed down, pull them up with a hammer. Fill the holes on the outside with wood putty.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the inside of the cleared-out cabinet with a measuring tape. Purchase a wine fridge that is a little smaller than the dimensions of the cabinet. These types of refrigerators are available in many sizes.

    • 3

Make a hole in the back of the cabinet with a drill for the power cord. If the back of the cabinet is not accessible, then make a hole in the side. Run the wine fridge power cord through the hole.

    • 4

Push the refrigerator unit all the way into the cabinet. Shim the wine fridge with small pieces of wood under the bottom edge, so the fridge is level. If the wine fridge sticks out of the cabinet too far, frame the opening with enough wood to bring the edge flush with the front of the appliance.

Smooth any rough areas on the cabinet with sandpaper. Paint or stain the wood with a paintbrush to match the rest of the cabinets in the bar area. Plug the wine fridge into an electrical outlet and chill your wine bottles.
