Mounting Ceiling Fans on a Sloped Ceiling

Installing a ceiling fan in place of an existing ceiling light is not a complicated project, unless the ceiling is not flat. A sloped ceiling complicates things because the fan itself has to have a level plane for the blades to operate correctly, even if the ceiling isn’t level. You can get a special bracket that sits against the sloped ceiling and provides a level surface from which to hang the fan. Also, the blades on the fan have to be dropped low enough so that they will clear the ceiling without bumping into the slope as they turn.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the existing light fixture at the house fuse box.

    • 2

Remove the existing fixture by taking out the screws and lowering it to disconnect the wiring above it. Remove the light completely. This will leave a black wire, a white wire and a bare copper grounding wire exposed in a ceiling electrical box.

    • 3

Set your sloped ceiling fan bracket to the electrical box, mounting it there with the provided screws. Adjust the bracket to level, as directed on your particular model.

    • 4

Wrap the end of the copper ground wire from the electrical box to the green ground screw on the sloped mounting bracket. Tighten the screw.

    • 5

Assemble the fan housing and down rod on the floor, according to the instructions for your particular fan. White and black wires should run from the unit, through the down rod, and out the top end. (Note: Don’t attach the fan blades yet.)

    • 6

Carry the fan unit up the ladder and hold it near the sloped bracket. Connect the black wire from the top of the down rod to the black wire from the electrical box, fitting a wire cap over both of them. Do the same for the white wires.

    • 7

Raise the top of the down rod to the sloped bracket. Mount it with the screws that came with the kit, so the wires are tucked into the bracket.

    • 8

Turn on the power and test of the motor. If it works, install the fan blades as instructed.
