How to Modernize a Laminated Cabinet

If you have an old laminate cabinet that is solid and in good shape but looks dated, you don't have to junk it and buy new one. You can install new laminate over existing laminate if the existing laminate is not coming off the surface. You can find peel-and-stick laminate at your local home improvement store, which is the easiest way to re-laminate a piece and bring it up to date.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hardware from the cabinet with a screwdriver. Lay out the wood laminate pieces on a work space.

    • 2

Sand each span of the laminate with a vibrating pad sander to dull the surface. Brush off the dust.

    • 3

Measure the first section of laminate along its width and length. Transfer the dimensions to a piece of self-sticking wood veneer laminate with a carpenter's square and pencil. Make the marked area about an inch bigger around the measurement.

    • 4

Cut out the piece of new laminate at the marked lines with a utility knife.

    • 5

Pull off the wax paper from the back of the laminate piece. Press it firmly onto the surface of the cabinet so it overhangs by an inch all around.

    • 6

Wrap a dish rag around a fist-sized block of wood. Press the wood firmly into the surface of the new laminate, from end to end.

    • 7

Cut off the excess laminate from around the edges with the utility knife.

    • 8

Repeat for each section of the cabinet. Re-install the cabinet hardware with the screwdriver.
