How to Frame a Raised Aisle Construction

Home theaters, outdoor bleachers and arena settings have aisles that provide a walkway for people to reach the available seating. Raised aisles are long, tiered steps that move upward at a gentle slope. You can frame the raised aisle so that the steps lead back in a gentle slope that allows for a person to easily walk along the raised aisle steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the entire length of the aisle. Determine the number of tiered steps the aisle will have. Calculate the measurements for each raised aisle section so all aisle lengths will be of equal distance with the riser face at a minimum of 4 inches up to a maximum of 8 inches. Make the treads at least a minimum of 11 inches.

    • 2

Cut the wood to the measurements for the length of the aisle. Nail down a wood base frame that's 48 inches wide for seating on both sides or 36 inches for only one side of seating.

    • 3

Secure two 4-inch to 8-inch boards to the base at the front for the riser face and two 4-inch to 8-inch boards at the other end. If the aisle stair is long, you can add more support along its length.

    • 4

Secure the top frame on the 4-inch to 8-inch boards. The raised aisle should look like one long rectangle box. Nail 4-inch to 8-inch boards as the next riser step onto the first raised aisle length. Attach another top frame to create the second tiered aisle step.

    • 5

Attach plywood to cover the framing for the aisles. Decide on a thickness based on what materials you will use to cover the aisles, such as a thicker plywood if covering the aisle with tiles or thinner plywood if covering with carpet.
