How to Hang Insulated Flexible Ducts from Rafters

Insulated flexible ducts consist of a wire-reinforced inner core surrounded by a fiberglass blanket. Although the reinforcing wire adds strength to the duct, it will not stop the inner liner from compressing if hung incorrectly. When the inner liner compresses, it disrupts the airflow from the air-handler unit to the vent supplying air to your home. Distributing weight with the correct hanger material will eliminate liner compression and keep air flowing correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull 24 to 36 inches from a roll of woven hanger material. Hold the end of the material 4 inches past the bottom of the rafter.

    • 2

Hold the point of an 8d nail in the upper left corner of the hanger material. Drive the nail into the side of the rafter with a hammer. Secure a second nail into the upper right corner of the hanger. Repeat the process to secure 2 additional nails 3 inches below the top ones.

    • 3

Pull the hanger material under the insulated flexible duct and up to the rafter.

    • 4

Cut the hanger strap so it extends 4 inches past the bottom of the rafter, by cutting across the material with a pair of scissors.

    • 5

Secure the hanger material to the rafter using the described nailing pattern. Repeat the process every 5 feet until the run of flexible duct is hung to the rafters.
