Curtain Ideas for Closets With Slanted Ceilings

A closet that fits underneath a sloping ceiling often works best with a curtain closure. It's difficult to install folding doors or a standard door on a sharply sloping ceiling area in any fashion. By using creative techniques, you can make a curtain treatment that has artistic flair. You could use a variety of curtain materials ranging from lace to leather, depending on the style of surrounding furniture and the design of the room.
  1. A Strong Rod Helps

    • You will need to suspend a rod for the curtain by finding ceiling rafters. Envision yourself facing a closet with a ceiling that tapers downward to the back wall, which is parallel to the opening. A strong rod with a sliding curtain over the front of the closet will hide clutter. If you plan to use the curtain a lot, you don't want the rod to collapse. Install the rod with brackets using an electric screwdriver and two-inch screws driven into rafters.

    Grommets Are Handy

    • Buy curtains with premade grommets installed. These are metal rings set into the cloth or vinyl at the factory. It's possible to clamp grommets into place on cloth you purchase, if you have a special tool. The metal rings allow the curtain to slide freely on the rod. Without grommets, you may have to tug unnecessarily on the fabric to open the curtain and reach inside the closet.

    Standard Fabric Options

    • Curtain material can either blend with surroundings or stand out boldly. For example, a simple white curtain will blend harmoniously with white walls and hardwood flooring. A bright, lime-green curtain can make a nice visual statement in a teenager's room or a child's play area. You can actually sew large pockets on the curtain to hold extra items, if the curtain material is extremely sturdy.

    Artistic Fabric Choices

    • Install curtains of shiny, metallic fabric in a play area or casual family room. If you build a room in the attic or a loft apartment, you can purchase cloth with a silver or copper sheen to cover the closet. Using a non-standard material gives you the opportunity to use the same fabric for throw pillows or lamp shades, so the closet design unites the space.

    Bead Covering

    • Bead sections can cover a closet opening. Hanging strands of beads, which are reminiscent of the 1960s, across a closet doorway can add an artistic touch in a casual area. If the closet is full of craft materials or toys, the beaded look can emphasize the fact the closet is used for something other than clothes.

    Cover the Gap

    • If the closet slants to the left or right, as you face it, the curtain design will need adjustment to open and close easily. A standard rod will work, but it will need to fit across the top of the opening with an open space, in the shape of a triangle, left at the top. The curtain can be just five or six feet off the ground with the slanted ceiling triangle area visible above it. To cover the open gap above the curtain rod, nail lattice or a plastic cutout over the odd-shaped opening.
