How to Anchor a Cabinet to a Wall

Installing you own cabinets can save you a considerable amount of money. Cabinets hold a lot of weight and must be properly anchored to the wall to support that weight. You can install and anchor a cabinet to the wall yourself, without the help of a professional cabinet maker or carpenter. You only need a little time, a few basic tools and an assistant to get the job done.

Use the stud finder to locate and mark all the studs along the walls where you are placing your cabinets. Place the mark slightly above the location of the top of your base cabinets. Make another mark just below the bottom of the top cabinets to indicate the location of the wall studs. Both pencil marks should be visible when the cabinets are in place.

Put a cabinet in the desired position. Use the level to make sure the cabinet is level from front to back. Level the cabinet from side to side. Insert wood shims where necessary.

Ask an assistant to hold the cabinet in place. Place a screw bit into the electric drill and drive a 2 1/2-inch wood screw into the back of the cabinet to secure the cabinet to the wall. Use the pencil mark on the wall to line up the wood screw with the wall stud. Put the first wood screw about 3 or 4 inches from the top of the cabinet. Place another wood screw about the same distance from the bottom of the cabinet.

Drive additional wood screws between the top and bottom screws. Place a screw about every 6 or 8 inches inside the cabinet to securely anchor it to the wall.
