Measure from the ceiling to the vertical level where you plan to install the closet rod. Using wire cutters, cut two lengths of light- to medium-duty utility chain to that length. Measure, mark and cut a wooden closet rod to the desired length.
Rest the trimmed closet rod on a flat surface. Measure and mark the rod, 2 inches from each end. Drill holes, slightly larger in diameter than the shanks of the bolt hooks, completely through the center of the rod, through each mark. Insert the shanks of the hooks in the drilled holes. Screw the nuts onto the bolt hooks. Turn the nuts until the curved portions of the hooks meet the closet rod.
Locate the ceiling joists where you plan to install the suspension hooks using a stud finder. Mark their positions. Drill vertical holes through the ceiling at each mark using a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the shanks of the 3-inch screw hooks. The holes should be at least 1 1/2 inches deep. Screw the screw hooks into the pilot holes in the ceiling.
Hang one end of each chain onto the screw hooks that are installed in the ceiling. Hang the hooks installed on the closet rod onto the ends of the hanging chains.
