How to Apply Countertop Laminate to Particleboard

Particleboard is a good, solid substrate material for installing laminate countertops. It’s heavy and durable and will make a strong base. Plus, it has a smoother finish than other substrate materials such as plywood. The smooth finish helps form a strong, long-lasting bond between the contact cement and the back of the laminate, and prevents the formation of air pockets and buckling.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Laminate sheets (according to counter measurements)
  • Circular saw
  • Contact cement
  • Router saw
  • 3-inch rubber roller
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions for the top and sides of the counter with a tape measure. Use a pencil to write down each measurement for reference on paper. Add 1/2-inch to all measurements. For example, if the measurement for the side strips were 28 inches by 1 inch, you would write 29 inches by 2 inches to allow for 1/2-inch on all sides for the dimensions to cut out the laminate sheets.

    • 2

Lay the laminate sheets flat on the floor in the direction you want the pattern to appear. In most cases, you will want to lay the sheets horizontally so you can make the countertops as seamless as possible. Measure the length and width of your laminate sheets and write down the measurements.

    • 3

Measure and mark the laminate sheets accordingly with a pencil, starting with the measurements for the side pieces. Use a circular saw to cut the laminate side strip pieces. Repeat the measuring and marking process to cut the main surface pieces for the countertop.

    • 4

Apply contact cement to the side edges of the particleboard counter. Start with the front section, and then proceed to side sections. Then apply contact cement to the back of the laminate pieces for the sides.

    • 5

Press the side pieces firmly into place against the particleboard. Trim excess with a router saw so the pieces are flush with the edges.

    • 6

Apply the contact cement to the top surface area of the particleboard countertop. Allow sufficient time for the cement to dry, according to the label directions.

    • 7

Apply contact cement to the laminate countertop.

    • 8

Lower the laminate piece on top of the countertop surface, working from the back edge of the countertop to the front. Press the laminate into place with your hands, starting from the center and working to each side. Go over the laminate with a 3-inch hard rubber roller. Start with a horizontal motion, working across the top surface, then go over the top surface with a vertical motion. This will help to remove any potential air bubbles.

    • 9

Trim the top side edges with a router. Sand after trimming, if needed.

    • 10

Allow the countertop to dry and cure for at least 24 hours, or according to the contact cement directions to complete your countertop project.
